Do any of us actually intend to end up in collegiate retailing?
I started in department store management right out of college. Loved retailing but the cut-throat nature of department store retailing wasn't for me. Luckily, a friend told me about a job at our undergraduate alma mater. I knew nothing about course materials and that was part of my responsibility as the director of that small store. I can't believe they hired me!
I learned everything through on-the-job training, industry education, and through industry volunteer opportunities. That would be much more difficult today as our jobs are much more complex!
I believe that industry volunteer opportunities are one of the best forms of professional development available to us. I also believe in the concept of paying it forward. To that end, I hope to continue volunteering in our industry for a long time!
